ROSEDALE ROAD MODERN ROUNDABOUT
Phase: Construction Completed
Purpose and Need: Provide for traffic calming and speed management as well as improve traffic operations and improve road safety for drivers and pedestrians.
Background: Mercer County has completed the conversion of a two-way stop controlled intersection at Rosedale Road (County Route 604) and General Johnson Drive into a mini-roundabout. The Greenway Meadows Park access is located on the South approach and access to the Johnson Park Elementary School on the North approach. This intersection experiences high pedestrian traffic due to the proximity of the park, nearby neighborhoods, and school. Speeding is also prominent along this stretch of roadway between Elm Street and Province Line Road.
The completed mini-roundabout is approximately 65 feet in diameter with 15-foot travel lanes and a mountable interior island 35-foot in diameter. The mini-roundabout functions as a safety-improvement as it promotes lower speeds and traffic calming.
According to FHWA’s Proven Safety Countermeasures, the geometry of a roundabout is key to controlling the speed at which traffic enters and maneuvers through the intersections providing benefits that include lower severity of collisions, increased likelihood of drivers yielding to pedestrians at crosswalks, and time for drivers to judge and enter a comfortable gap in circulating traffic. In addition, roundabouts have less conflict points than traditional intersections.
To increase the effectiveness of the proposed mini-roundabout, the County reduced the existing 45 MPH and 40 MPH posted speed limits on Rosedale Road between Elm Street and Province Line Road. The existing 25 MPH School Zone Flashers have and will remain in effect.
