Building a More Sustainable Mercer County

Mercer County is taking an important step toward shaping a more sustainable, resilient, and equitable future for residents, businesses, and visitors alike.

Through the development of a new Sustainability Element within the Mercer County Master Plan, the County is creating a long-term roadmap to reduce environmental impacts, strengthen resilience to climate risks, and support a thriving, inclusive local economy. The Sustainability Element will guide both government operations and community-wide efforts to protect natural resources, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and improve quality of life, today and for generations to come.

What Is the Sustainability Element?

The Sustainability Element will establish a comprehensive, long-range framework for advancing policies, projects, and programs that support:

  • Reduced greenhouse gas emissions
  • Stronger resilience to climate impacts and natural hazards
  • Conservation and restoration of natural resources
  • Clean mobility and sustainable transportation choices
  • Waste reduction and responsible materials management
  • Water conservation and watershed protection
  • Green jobs and sustainable economic development
  • Community education, engagement, and partnership
  • Equity, environmental justice, and inclusive decision-making

Together, these focus areas ensure that Mercer County’s sustainability efforts are holistic, data-driven, and grounded in community needs.

A Data-Driven, Community-Informed Approach

As part of this effort, the County is conducting a thorough assessment of current sustainability performance across both County government operations and the broader community. This includes analyzing existing conditions, policies, programs, and data to understand where Mercer County is today, and where there are opportunities to do better.

Building on this foundation, the Sustainability Element will prioritize strategies that:

  • Reduce emissions and energy use
  • Protect people, infrastructure, and ecosystems from climate risks
  • Support economic vitality and workforce development
  • Center equity and ensure benefits are shared across all communities

The following timeline summarizes the project’s development, demonstrating how coordination, public outreach, and data collection and analysis are sequenced over time to integrate into and inform the development of the draft plan.
