New Jersey Senior Citizen Art Show (NJSAS):

The New Jersey Senior Citizen Art Show [NJSAS] has celebrated the vision, talent and creative power of the State’s older artists for over five decades. In 1966, New Jersey’s Division on Aging, Department of Community Affairs, sponsored the first statewide Senior Citizen Art Contest and Exhibition. This recreational opportunity for senior citizens has become today’s prestigious arts exhibit!

In 1998, the New Jersey State Council on the Arts assumed responsibility for the show and awarded a co-sponsorship grant to Union County’s Office of Cultural & Heritage Affairs to coordinate the show starting in 1999. The New Jersey Association of Area Agencies on Aging also provided support. Mercer County’s Division of Culture & Heritage took over coordination of the NJSAS in 2014 and continues to host the show to this day.

The art featured in this annual exhibit represents the first-place winners selected from local County Senior Art Shows held earlier in the year. Both professional and non-professional New Jersey artists aged 60 or older may enter their local county shows. All County shows are juried, and the first place professional and non-professional winners in all categories automatically go on to the State Show.
