Mercer County, located along the Delaware River midway between New York and Philadelphia, has been home to thousands of Americans. Its immigrant history is representative of immigrant experience in the northeast.
Although Mercer County itself, wasn’t created until 1838 from portions of Burlington, Hunterdon, Middlesex and Somerset counties, European settlements have existed in the region since the early 1600s. Mercer County played an important role in colonial history as well as the industrial revolution, attracting waves of immigrant settlers from the earliest days of the Nation’s development.
