In the late 1990s, Hunter Research, Inc. was contracted by the NJ Department of Transportation (NJDOT) and Federal Highway Administration to provide the necessary historical and archaeological support as part of the Route 29 waterfront improvements taking place in south Trenton. The Lamberton Street tunnel and the beautiful South Riverwalk Park were two of the more obvious results of these improvements, but some of the astonishing history of this region was also rediscovered in the form of historical objects, abandoned foundations, long-buried kilns and other fascinating artifacts unearthed by the archeologists in the course of this project.

Hunter Research staff prepared a five-volume report on these findings, Archaeological Data Recovery Excavations and Monitoring, New Jersey Route 29, City of Trenton, Mercer County, New Jersey which can be found at some local libraries, as well as the NJ DOT and the NJ Historic Preservation Office. They also authored a wonderful six-volume series of booklets distilling some of this information for the public. These are available here thanks to Hunter Research, the NJ Department of Transportation, and the Federal Highway Administration.
