How You Can Help Hurricane Harvey Victims?

  • The Red Cross depends on financial donations to help provide immediate relief. Text the word HARVEY to 90999 to make a $10 donation. You can also visit Red Cross Website or call 1-855-999-GIVE.
  • The United Way has also announced a way to text a donation: Text UWFLOOD to 41444 to donate to the United Way Flood Relief Fund.
  • Donations to support The Salvation Army's Hurricane Harvey relief efforts can be made through their website or by calling 1-800-SAL-ARMY.

Give cash, not supplies
Most charities prefer monetary donations. These are more flexible and cause less of a strain on the charity, allowing them to help more people.

As an arm of the Attorney General’s Office, Consumer Affairs is empowered to enforce N.J.S.A. 56:8-1 et seq. (The Consumer Fraud Act). All staff members are trained, tested and have passed all courses required by the Attorney General's Office and are certified.

The Mercer County office handles complaints from individual consumers against local businesses. It protects Mercer County consumers from fraudulent and unconscionable business practices and provides consumer counseling and complaint resolution services to approximately 375,000 Mercer County residents. While its jurisdiction is most Mercer County businesses, it provides a referral service to assist all Mercer County consumers. Consumer Education is a priority in this office.

The Consumer Affairs Office cannot:

  • Act as a lawyer or handle a complaint when a lawyer is involved.
  • Recommend a business, product or service.
  • Investigate or resolve complaints from consumers against other consumers.
  • Take action if a complaint has involved court action or a court decision.

In contrast to the Better Business Bureau, which charges a fee for consumers to file a complaint and has no legal authority or power, the Mercer County Division of Consumer Affairs never charges a fee for any service rendered to consumers.
