Freeholder Board Teams with Shine and Inspire Closet for Annual Donation Drive

TRENTON – The Mercer County Board of Chosen Freeholders recently announced a partnership with Mercer County non-profit Shine and Inspire for their annual winter donation drive. The Freeholders will be collecting personal hygiene products, school supplies, non-perishable food, and clothing. The drive will kick off on January 7, 2020 and run through February 25, 2020.

Sadly, in Mercer County many low-income and displaced children choose not to attend school because they cannot afford basic hygienic items. This is coupled with students not being able to afford food on days where free school lunch is not provided. Shine and Inspire recently opened Shine and Inspire Closets at Ewing High School and the Trenton Board of Education Headquarters. This allows students to take hygiene products, school supplies, clothing, or non-perishable food without fear of judgment.

“A student's sole focus should be school, they shouldn’t feel embarrassed about personal appearance or fear not being able to afford lunch when school is not in session,” said Freeholder Pasquale “Pat” Colavita. “The Freeholders and I are proud to partner with Shine and Inspire and help grow their Shine and Inspire Closet initiative. The closet allows students to have a judgment-free zone where they can obtain the basic necessities we all need."
