Poultryman to give 'Meet the Farmer' talk

Post Date:05/08/2019 12:29 PM

HOPEWELL TOWNSHIP -- Chicken history will be the focus at Howell Living History Farm on Wednesday, May 15, when poultryman Tom Wooden of Lambertville presents the second program in the “Meet the Farmer” series.

During his talk, Mr. Wooden will tell the story of his family's poultry farm and business in Hopewell Township from 1938 to 1970. The presentation includes photographs of the farm's three-story chicken house, adjacent brooder coop, and the two-room schoolhouse that stood on the property before his parents bought it and converted it into their home. There will also be a display of some of the tools and equipment they used to maintain their flock of 7,000 birds.

Following Mr. Wooden's talk, historian Larry Kidder will talk about the acquisition of the property by Mercer County, and how it will be used for new programs at Howell Farm and the surrounding Pleasant Valley Historic District.

After the program, guests can meet and talk with the presenters over refreshments provided by the Friends of Howell Farm.

The “Meet the Farmer” series will continue on June 20 with beekeeper Bob Hughes of Yardville. The programs are free and begin at 7 p.m.

Howell Farm is owned by the County of Mercer and operated by the Mercer County Park Commission. It is located on Valley Road, just off Route 29, seven miles north of Washington Crossing. The GPS address is 70 Woodens Lane, Hopewell Township, NJ 08530.
