HOPEWELL TOWNSHIP, N.J. — Herding your flock through the twists and turns of Howell Farm's corn maze could be a lot easier with the help of a border collie. After meeting Gene Sheninger and his dogs Sweet, Ket and Nick in the maze courtyard this weekend, it may be something you consider.

Mr. Sheninger, who competes in sheepdog trials throughout the U.S. and world, will visit the maze to meet visitors and demonstrate the age-old art and of herding sheep. Performances will be held at 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 7 and 14, and Sunday, Oct. 8 and 15. At his side will be three of the top-ranked border collies in the world.

There is no charge to watch the demonstrations, which are connected with this year's corn maze theme. The picture is formed by the maze's pathways of a shepherd herding a flock of sheep, with the help of a border collie.

The sheep-herding demonstrations are among many free activities offered in the maze courtyard, just outside the 3-acre cornfield maze. Admission into the maze is $10 for ages 10 and up, $8 for ages 5-9.

The maze is the annual fundraiser of the all-volunteer Friends of Howell Farm, a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. Proceeds from the maze are used to support the farm's historic preservation projects and its educational programs for schools.

Howell Farm is owned by the County of Mercer and operated by the Mercer County Park Commission. The corn maze is located on Valley Road, one mile west of the farm. GPS address: 17 Valley Road, Hopewell Township, N.J. 08530. The farm's Visitor Center and historic site are located at 70 Woodens Lane, Hopewell Township. Visiting hours at the farm are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and noon to 4 p.m. Sundays.
